Record number of career ready graduates join Sunderland’s Tomorrow Makers

173 graduates from RDI Ltd (now Sunderland’s Hong Kong campus) received their degree awards at the University of Sunderland graduation ceremony in Hong Kong last week, the largest graduating cohort as well as the largest MBA class since RDI’s partnership with the University of Sunderland started in 1990.

This year’s graduate numbers increased by 8% while the MBA class saw 21 more graduates compared to last year.

This is topped by a remarkable number of students achieving a first or second class honours degree; over 82% of our 2016 graduands graduated with an honour degree, and more than 68% of them achieved a first or second class honours. This includes a 16% rise in the Accounting and Financial Management class and further 4% increase in the Business Management class.

Our Head of Academics in Hong Kong, Jenny Bovard, says this of today’s graduation results: “We are excited to have helped our graduands to develop their academic strengths, encouraged their personal growth and inspired them to learn. The University of Sunderland encourages its students to be active learners and to fully participate in a free and open exchange of ideas and viewpoints. Our graduation numbers are pleasing and are a product of this philosophy of education.”

An MBA graduate, 2016, Savindra Silva claims that “During the study period of more than 2 years, I have been able to use some of the learning to improve my day to day work. Further, as the dissertation topic was related to my work area, I was able to learn and understand a great deal more about my own job. This has helped me in my discussions with many senior stakeholders and also contributed towards me having an educated view of the world.”

Yeeny Mok, a 2016 BA (Hons) Business Management graduate, shared with us how the University get her career ready and success. “I feel more confident talking or presenting in public or in front of many people at work. Most importantly, the time management skills I developed means I can do a better job and work more effectively to get thing done on time in order to follow close upon the pace of work in Hong Kong.

In 2016, RDI Ltd became a part of the University of Sunderland and is now the University’s Hong Kong campus. In early 2017, the company will be launched as the University of Sunderland in Hong Kong, offering a three campus proposition, allowing students to experience studying at the different campuses in Sunderland, London and Hong Kong.

The University of Sunderland was named ‘the Best University in the North East UK for Satisfaction with Teaching’ in a range of academic areas in the Guardian League Tables of 2017, and aims to deliver next generation of ‘tomorrow makers’ with transferable skills, leadership and the creation of knowledge for ‘career ready’.
