With the goal of developing the next generation of Sport and Recreation industry professionals, Hong Kong, China Rugby (HKCR) have partnered with the University of Sunderland in Hong Kong, and in collaboration with Kai Tak Sports Initiative (Community Project by Kai Tak Sports Park), to deliver the Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma in Sport.

In addition to being internationally recognised for organising the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, HKCR are leaders in delivering community sports programmes. This unique Higher National Diploma in Sport will give students a high-quality tertiary education combined with practical experience and networking opportunities that lead to real-world outcomes. All students on the programme will get an opportunity to gain some sports-related work experiences from various sports organisations through one of the modules.

BTEC is one of the world’s most recognised applied learning brands, engaging students in practical, interpersonal, and thinking skills for more than thirty years. Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to help students secure the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in the workplace.

The purpose of the Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma in Sport is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals with an opportunity to work within many areas of the Sport and Recreation industry, including Sports Development, Health and Fitness Management, Sports Facility Management, and Outdoor Adventure Management.

In addition, graduates of the Higher National Diploma in Sport programme may gain advanced entry to related degree programmes in the UK. Moreover, they will be eligible for senior year admissions (3rd year entry) to numerous sports related bachelor’s degrees offered at various tertiary institutions throughout Hong Kong. Extensive progression routes to a bachelor’s degree include the University of Sunderland, local institutes via the Non-Jupas path, and other overseas institutes.

Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Health

Learning Outcomes:

  • Examine the role of physical activity in the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle
  • Investigate the impact of lifestyle factors and physical inactivity on health and wellbeing
  • Plan lifestyle enhancement programmes for selected individuals
  • Review lifestyle enhancement programmes for selected individual

The Sport Landscape

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify key policy stages and priority shifts in sports development
  • Examine the structure, partnerships and funding of current sport policy
  • Illustrate the significance of sport as a political, social and cultural tool
  • Review mass participation and elite sport models, strategies and/or policies

Sports Marketing

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore the role of marketing within a sports organisation
  • Investigate the core principles of the marketing mix
  • Explain the role of digital marketing within the sports industry
  • Create a marketing communications campaign for a sports organisation

Risk and Safety Management in the Outdoors

Learning Outcomes:

  • Investigate theories, current policies and legislations in relation to promoting proactive safety procedures in adventurous activities
  • Develop risk assessments, safety statements and standard operating procedures for operating in the outdoors
  • Demonstrate effective application of safety procedures in changing situations while participating or delivering outdoor activities
  • Discuss the concept of a “standard of care” that is reasonable and prudent

Inclusive Sport

Learning Outcomes:

  • Investigate the potential barriers individuals may face when participating in physical activity and sport
  • Demonstrate knowledge of methods of inclusion which allow all to participate in physical activity and sport
  • Conduct activities designed to allow all to participate
  • Assess the suitability of physical activity and sport programmes designed to increase participation

Environmental Issues & Ethics

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the origins of the environmental movement and the impact of outdoor
    activities on the environment
  • Investigate the importance of the outdoor environment and whether outdoor
    activities can operate alongside conservation or preservation
  • Undertake an environmental sustainability project that addresses the impact of
    outdoor activities on the natural environment
  • Examine the effectiveness of environmental policies and guidance in achieving
    sustainable use of the countryside for outdoor activities

Project Management

Learning Outcomes:

  • Establish project aims, objectives and time frames based on the chosen theme
  • Conduct small-scale research, information gathering and data collection to generate knowledge to support the project
  • Present the project and communicate appropriate recommendations based on meaningful conclusions drawn from the evidence findings and/or analysis
  • Reflect on the value gained from conducting the project and its usefulness to support sustainable organisational performance

Residential Activity Management

Learning Outcomes:

  • Investigate the key concepts of good practice in an outdoor residential centre
  • Plan a residential programme experience for a selected cohort, applying the
    principles of good practice
  • Facilitate the delivery of a residential learning experience for a selected cohort
  • Analyse the evidence for residential outdoor learning and critically evaluate its
    impacts

Entrepreneurism in Sport

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore the key characteristics and skills of entrepreneurs
  • Explore the factors that have contributed to the growth and development of entrepreneurships
  • Investigate the development of a business idea suitable for the sports industry
  • Produce a business startup plan, suitable for a new entrepreneurship within the sports industry

Outdoor Facility Management

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss the roles of the manager within an outdoor facility
  • Evaluate a range of management styles and their effectiveness in a variety of circumstances
  • Explore the organisational considerations for successful programming in an outdoor facility
  • Demonstrate managerial skills of a safe and positive programme within an outdoor facility context

Personal and Professional Development

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore the skill and experience requirements of careers within the sports industry
  • Assess own personal and professional skills
  • Produce a personal and professional development plan
  • Carry out a personal and professional development plan

Event Management

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore the growth and development of events and the event industry
  • Explore the importance of crowd management in the successful management of sports events
  • Plan, stage and manage a sports event
  • Review the planning and implementation of a sports event

Managing a Sports Programme

Learning Outcomes:

  • Assess the objectives, partnerships and funding of sports development programmes
  • Analyse contemporary issues and barriers for sports development programmes
  • Conduct a community sports development programme
  • Review the community sports development programme

Work Experience

Learning Outcomes:

  • Investigate different work experience opportunities within the sport industry
  • Develop a work experience placement

Research Project

  • Examine appropriate research methodologies and approaches as part of the research process
  • Conduct and analyse research relevant to a Sport research project
