This master’s is a conversion course that is suitable for graduates who have not studied psychology as a first degree. The course is offered full-time over one year or part-time over 15 months.

At the end of the course, you could choose to undertake further study in psychology. Alternatively, your understanding of psychology will help you in sectors such as advertising, social work, public services, general management, and human resources.

Course structure

We use various teaching and learning methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, and tutorials. Our thriving research programme in health behaviours and mental health supports the research aspects of the course. The course syllabus includes social psychology, biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology and psychometrics

Assessment methods are a combination of coursework, including practical reports, research proposals, and presentations.

Compared to an undergraduate course, you will find that this master’s requires a higher level of independent working.

180 credits 8 modules and 1 project
Introduction to Psychology (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore a variety of significant psychological discoveries across topics such as child development, personality, brain functioning, and interpersonal relationships.
  • Understand how psychologists operate in both academic and applied settings.
  • Learn how psychological discoveries inform practical applications in real-world contexts.
  • Develop critical assessment skills to evaluate psychological claims and evidence.
  • Acquire the ability to understand and analyse original research articles in psychology.
  • Enhance skills in evaluating claims made in the field of psychology based on empirical evidence.

Brain and Behaviour: Biological Psychology (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the anatomy and function of the human brain and nervous system.
  • Learn about psychophysiological processes and the endocrine system.
  • Explore behavioural genetics and neuroscience measurement techniques.
  • Examine comparative and evolutionary models of human behaviour.
  • Apply biological psychology concepts to real-world scenarios in your field of study.

Social Psychology: Interactions and Influences (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the key theories and concepts in social psychology regarding individual and group interactions.
  • Explore empirical research that informs insights into human thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
  • Gain knowledge of how social contexts influence individual behaviour.


Personality and Psychometrics (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how psychologists define and quantify individual differences in personality.
  • Explore the origins of personality differences and their impact on personal and professional life.
  • Analyse the implications of various personality traits, such as introversion versus sociability and caution versus impulsivity.
  • Learn how personality traits can predict behaviour, success, and well-being in applied contexts like organisational, health, educational, forensic, sports, and clinical psychology.

Understanding Growth and Change: Developmental Psychology (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand human growth and change across the lifespan, from conception to old age.
  • Examine biological, cognitive, social, and emotional development at different life stages.
  • Learn how individuals acquire knowledge, memory, language, and higher-order thinking skills.
  • Explore the influence of relationships and societal factors on identity, self-concept, and emotional well-being, while critically evaluating developmental theories through research and case studies.

Ordinary and Extraordinary Minds: Cognitive Psychology (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore the cognitive skills involved in everyday activities, such as shopping, studying, and socialising.
  • Understand how cognition differs among animals, individuals with acquired brain injuries, and those with extraordinary abilities like polyglots and mnemonists.
  • Uncover the complexities of cognitive processes that support various tasks and interactions in daily life.

Measuring Minds: Exploring Quantitative Research (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Acquire essential skills for designing and conducting quantitative research in psychology.
  • Master descriptive and inferential analysis techniques, including hands-on experience with statistical software.
  • Develop proficiency in reporting psychological research findings and gain transferable skills for future research projects or applications.

Beyond Numbers: Exploring Qualitative Research (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore various qualitative research paradigms and their techniques in psychology and allied disciplines.
  • Develop an understanding of the underlying philosophies of qualitative research.
  • Design, conduct, and evaluate your own qualitative research, along with skills to present your findings.

Research Project (60 credits)

Learning Outcomes – Knowledge:

  • This is the final module in your programme, where you put together all the psychological skills and knowledge that you have been learning in previous modules, to design and carry out an independent research project under supervision.

  • This master’s programme of Psychology can be completed in 15 months.

  • There is one assessment for each module (Eight in total).
  • There is one project for this programme.

Entry Requirements
Degree / relevant work experience
  • A bachelor’s degree with honours (2:2 or above / lower second class level); OR
  • A professional qualification (or combination of qualifications) recognised as being the equivalent of an honours degree; OR
  • Applicants who do not meet the above requirements may exceptionally be considered (normally following an interview) at the discretion of the programme leader; AND
  • English proficiency equivalent to HKDSE Level 3 / IELTS 6.0 with at least 5.5 or higher in each component: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Candidates whose first language is English or whose previous verified qualification was taught and assessed in English are exempted from the aforementioned English language requirement.
