This part-time Bachelor’s Degree (Hons) in Business and Human Resource Management programme is highly relevant to the workplace. It has a greater focus on the skills and knowledge needed for the Human Resources function in modern organisations.

Throughout the duration of your education, you will study a range of course modules, which will help you understand contemporary developments in HR, learning and development, employee relations, as well as giving you a solid grounding in the fundamentals of business relevant in both Hong Kong and the UK.

The final year of our bachelor’s programme is for students with a Higher National Diploma (HND), an Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma in Business while the year 3 pathway helps other students with post-secondary qualification bridging to the final year of the bachelor’s degree.

UGB351 - Contemporary Employee Relations (20 credits)

Learning Outcomes – Knowledge:

  • An understanding of theoretical approaches and key aspects of employment relations, including acquisition of coherent and detailed knowledge and debates informed by current research and practice.
  • Conceptual understanding of the dynamic context in which the actors and institutional mechanisms concerned with the employment relationship interact.
  • Critical understanding of employer strategies and practices towards positive employee relations, participation and engagement.

Learning Outcomes – Skills:

  • An ability to formulate and apply appropriate human resource management techniques and strategies to realistic workplace scenarios, for example, how to manage issues such as dismissal, redundancy and retirement effectively and legally.
  • An ability to analyse practical employment relations issues to identify potential causes and develop skills for dealing with specific conflict situations.
  • An ability to assess arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data with a view to implementing appropriate HR strategies and practices intended to raise levels of employee engagement in a specific organisational context.

UGB361 - Developing the Reflexive practitioner (20 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

  • A critical understanding of their evolving identity and or self-image as future managers and leaders through critical reflective practice.
  • A critical understanding of the challenges for the authentic Business professional of the 21st century.
  • The ability to critically reflect on the qualitative research design strategy which uses personal data sources.
  • Critical evaluation and analysis of personal data sources which are presented as a storyboard.
  • Through critical reflection, developing routines of self-awareness as future managers and leaders.

UGB371 - Managing and Leading Change (20 credits)

Learning Outcomes – Knowledge:

  • A critical understanding of change variables (i.e. the change content, process, context and human resource factors) and how these influence individual and organizational change readiness.
  • An evaluative understanding of models and approaches to change and their suitability to differing organizational contexts.
  • An evaluative understanding of models and approaches that support the organizations human resources to transition through change.

Learning Outcomes – Skills:

  • The ability to investigate and develop diagnostic skills that support managers and leaders to be more effective in assessing change requirements in organizations.
  • The ability to propose a set of recommendations and a supporting action plan for implementing change, that gives due consideration to the process and human factors.

UGB350 - Exploring Equality and Diversity (20 credits)

Learning Outcomes – Knowledge:

  • A systematic understanding of key aspects of the challenges of equality informed by up-to-date research and legislation.
  • A coherent and detailed knowledge of the significance of equality awareness.
  • Critical awareness of scholarly reviews and primary sources (for example, refereed research articles and/or original materials) appropriate to the values and philosophy of equality.

Learning Outcomes – Skills:

  • Clear analysis and exploration of a range of secondary sources in relation to equality issues.
  • Detailed synthesis of the potential consequences of the equality issue for the HR profession.
  • Critical reflection on ethical behaviours and philosophical values which can influence approaches to dealing with equality issues in the workplace.

UGB369 - International HRM (20 credits)

Learning Outcomes – Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the complexity of and the evolving nature, purpose and business activities of the Human Resource Management function in Multi-National Environments operating in global settings.
  • Ability to select, compare and contrast appropriate models and approaches for delivering and managing the Human Resource Management function within a global context.
  • Understanding of the range of factors that need consideration when designing and/or delivering Human Resource Management strategies/solutions within a global context in particular looking at Multi-National Enterprises.

Learning Outcomes – Skills:

  • Design, creation and evaluation of Human Resource Management intervention(s) appropriate for an Organizational Expatriate [OE] which are timely, feasible, cost-effective and appropriate.

UGB370 - Applied HR Project (20 credits)

Learning Outcomes – Knowledge:

  • A contextual awareness of the scope and application of research techniques to current areas of HR-related research.

Learning Outcomes – Skills:

  • The ability to select, propose, design and time manage an appropriate HR research-based project in a UK or overseas setting.
  • The ability to collect and analyse data in the HR setting.
  • The ability to present HR research findings and/or recommendations in a credible and professional manner.

Mode of Study
Part Time Blended Learning
  • This degree can be completed in a minimum of 12 months.
  • Part-time tuition includes 24 hours of online lectures and 12 hours of face-to-face tutorials per 20-credit module.
  • Tutorial schedule is designed to suit busy professionals who work and study at the same time.

6 assignments Six in each year level
  • This programme is assessed by 6 assignments.

Entry Requirements
HKDSE/HKCEE/HKALE/IB Diploma/Associate Degree/Higher Diploma
  • Holder of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business / HRM; OR
  • Applicants who are holders of Higher Diploma/Associate Degree in Business / HRM or equivalent are considered on a case by case basis; AND
  • English proficiency of IELTS 6.0; GCSE Grade C or equivalent.
  • Other students without the above qualification are considered on a case by case basis or can enter the final year top-up programme via HND pathways.

Candidates whose first language is English or whose previous verified qualification was taught and assessed in English are exempted from the aforementioned English Language requirement.
